FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions homeowners ask most about heat pump repair – response times, repair versus replace, refrigerant, and winter icing.
After-hours and emergency calls may carry an additional charge for the priority response involved. We’ll always tell you the cost upfront before any work begins, so there are no surprises.
Yes. Our technicians are trained and equipped to repair every major heat pump brand, so you only need one call no matter who made your system or where it was installed.
Weak heating can come from low refrigerant, a stuck reversing valve, a defrost problem, or a dirty coil, among other causes. Because heat pumps are complex, it’s best to have a technician diagnose it properly rather than guess. We’ll find the real cause.
If your heat pump is under about 8 to 10 years old and the repair is reasonable, fixing it usually makes sense. For older systems facing a major repair like a compressor, replacement may be the smarter long-term value. We’ll give you both options honestly.
Some frost is normal in winter, and a heat pump runs defrost cycles to clear it. Heavy or persistent ice, though, points to a problem, such as a stuck defrost cycle, low refrigerant, or airflow issues, and should be checked before it causes damage.
We prioritize breakdowns that leave you without heating or cooling and reach most homes the same day. Response times vary with demand and location, and we’ll always give you a realistic window when you call.
BEFORE YOU CALL
5 Quick Checks Before You Call Us
Before you book a service call, try these five quick checks. They solve a surprising number of heat pump problems in minutes, and cost you nothing.
Check the Thermostat
Make sure it's set to the mode you want (heat or cool) and a few degrees past room temperature. Swap the batteries if it's battery-powered, since a dead battery is a common, easy fix.
Check the Breaker and Power
Look for a tripped breaker in your panel and confirm the power switches near the indoor and outdoor units are on. Heat pumps draw significant power and can trip a breaker.
Replace the Air Filter
A clogged filter chokes airflow and hurts both heating and cooling. If yours is dirty, replace it and give the system time to recover.
Clear the Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor unit needs airflow. Gently clear away snow, ice, leaves, and debris, and keep the area around it clear so it can work properly.
Give It a Defrost Cycle
If the outdoor unit is iced up, your heat pump may just need to run its defrost cycle. Give it time before assuming the worst, but if heavy ice keeps returning, it's time to call us.
